The word coat was being used as far back and the middle ages, Persia now Iran was the country that gave us the
seamed fitted coats and trousers. Through the years the coat evolved into what we now know as mens black coats.
In the beginning of the nineteenth century there were two categories of coats, under coats and overcoats. Though
the term under coat no longer is used it was worn under the outer coat usually for warmth. Mens black coats can
also be called jackets, hence the term smoking jacket and the tail coats.
The mens black coats were sometimes called a frock coat, a knee length that was worn during the nineteenth
century. They were very dapper looking and were worn by the upper crust men of high society. Morning coats were
very popular as men wore these during the morning, usually on their way to work or to socialize, and they are still
worn today.
Mens black coats could also be called a tail coat, such as an example of black tail and tie. Very dressy and was
worn to fancy social gatherings. Mens black coats were worn as smoking jackets as well. These were generally worn
during the late afternoon and evening when the men would gather to smoke their cigars and drink a brandy.
Today mens black coats are not as formal as they once were; they have become more lax in style and fit. A lot of
men like the double breast coats, ones that have two rows of buttons o snaps. The original double breasted mens
black coats had the six buttons with three that would close.
